The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Desilú León, stated that the application of a universal 10% tariff by the United States on imports from almost all countries, with the exception of China, which will face a 125% tariff, would primarily benefit countries that previously faced higher tariffs by temporarily aligning them with a common 10% tariff.
In the case of Peru, which has a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States, the additional 10% tariff on products that previously entered tariff-free would remain in place.
Within this framework, the head of Mincetur stated that she believes this pause opens the way for technical dialogue on trade issues of interest, which will allow us to continue holding meetings aimed at reviewing the treatment applicable to Peruvian products and strengthening our position as a reliable trading partner.
She also indicated that Peru is among the countries that have requested technical meetings with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the competent authority for foreign trade in that country, and reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening bilateral dialogue on trade matters.
"This rapprochement will allow us to highlight the strategic value of our trade relationship and demonstrate the mutual benefits of the FTA, which has been in effect for more than a decade. We can demonstrate that the trade balance with Peru does not pose a risk to the interests of the United States and that our exports meet high technical, health, and environmental standards," she emphasized.
In parallel with the negotiations with the United States, Minister León indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MINCETUR) is strengthening actions aimed at market diversification and promoting Peruvian exports to other destinations.
"We are actively participating in international fairs, trade missions, and business meetings as part of a complementary strategy that seeks to reduce risks and open new opportunities for our exporters," she noted. He also commented that the opening of new markets is being promoted, with particular emphasis on ongoing trade negotiations with Guatemala, El Salvador, India, Indonesia, and the upcoming start of negotiations with the United Arab Emirates.
